Types of Fabric

Stepping into a fabric store can sometimes be overwhelming with all the choices. Where does one even begin?

But a sewing projects needs the proper fabric so that the outcome is what the designer intended.

Have you ever worn a top that didn’t quite have the right drape or feel for the cut? Certain fabrics have specific purposes and it’s important to know what you are looking for before you purchase.

I have compiled a list of fabric types and their uses to help you out. This list is not exhaustive but more of a general starting point to get you going.

Now that you have an understanding of what certain types of fabrics are used for, it may be time for you to “break the rules like an artist”.

Just because a fabric has its traditional use, does not mean you cannot use it for other purposes.  You just need to be aware of its specific properties.

This list gives an overview of the typical fabric characteristics. Again this list is an overview generalization. So don’t take my word for it, be sure to check care instructions on the end of the bolts as fibre contents play a big role in how to care for your fabric. But I hope this list will give you a good starting point to help you plan your design.
